Earthbound Easy Way to Get Trex Bat With Jeff

EDIT: So I guess this guide exists already on the site. Enjoy anyway!

So I'm still slowly working my way through Earthbound, doing all kinds of over-leveling and fun things most people wouldn't spend time doing. Today's adventure, getting the T-Rex Bat with Jeff.

A few things you might already know, and some you might not:

1. You can't leave the main island until you get the bat. Once you get on Tessie, you can't go back until you have teleportation.

2. Your only source of income will be cookies and bread rolls dropped by Spiteful Crows and Runaway Dogs—as well as a few other lucrative items that you'll get later. The Runaway Dog drops less often, but bread rolls go for $6 where as cookies only go for $3.

3. Simply sell all the worthless things you have in your inventory (but keep your equips, the egg, and few cookies for you first couple of Gruff Goat battles), and then go hunting!

4. Eventually Jeff will be able to repair the broken spray can to get defense spray. Just go down and get some stew from the Tessie watchers and he'll do it overnight. The defense spray goes for $250—a big step in the right direction. I also like to sell the big bottle rocket for $69.

5. Finally, if you're patient, you'll make enough money and you can bring Ness a sweet present when you finally make it back to Threed.

If you don't run away from the Gruff Goats, you'll have Jeff around level 10 when you finally got to the Brick Road dungeon. He's pretty much unstoppable at that point.

Let me know if you've ever done this before?

I've never done this before, but it is a fairly common challenge. There's a guide for it on the site's EB walkthrough I think

My challenge that I do with Jeff is get him to a higher level than Ness before going back to Threed. I've always found that to be fun, and I don't think it takes as long

AKA Space Captain Giegue Von Drakne Esq.

I hate to tell you this after the work you put in, but this guide has been on the site for quite some time now, and with slightly more detail.

Edit: I cannot comprehend the speed of Giegue's posting. Anyway, Giegue, I usually do that just for balance reasons, and also picnic lunches are a nice present to bring back to Ness and Paula trapped with probably nothing but junk food. Of course my Ness is usually level 20 or so, so it's hardly a grind.

I've got Ness at level 37, so it might be hard for me. Heheheh.

i remember doing this. Took me an hour and i got jeff higher leveled than Paula.

My Ness is at level 45. I'm planning on levelling Jeff until he can Auto-win against a Cave Boy, or until I can prove it impossible to do so.
Anyway, here's a picture.

Man, waehofen! You're just making things harder and harder for me, aren't you. How long did that take!? And what's Paula's level right now for you. I've just started in Winters and I have — Ness: 37, Paula: 28, Jeff: 12.

I did the T rex bat challenge with the Bubble Monkey helping Jeff in battles. I was tempted to do it purely with the monkey attacking and Jeff defending but it was a bit boring with Jeff mainly attacking, so I scrapped that idea. I found the Goats not much of a challenge after a short while as they mainly do minimal damage

I took the challenge during the Funktastic Gameplay. I thought I'd never do it, but I did.

I've done this on every playthrough I've had since I learned about it. One time I got my Jeff to a higher level than my Paula by fighting the cave boys at Stonehenge for a long time. Those guys take forever to defeat and can hit you pretty hard at that point in the game, but they miss a lot, so although it takes a long time to kill them they're actually pretty easy given the fact you haven't sold all of your equipment for the T-Rex Bat challenge. They give off insane EXP for that point in the game, too, since you're probably not supposed to be fighting them yet.

You could also sell your Pop Gun ($55) if you want to get it over with. KEEP THE HAT THOUGH. YOU'LL NEED IT. There's a Stun Gun in Dungeon Mans dungeon. But the only downside is that Jeff will be weaker and unable to defeat enemies too easily. Persevere till you get the gun

Pssh! If you spend the time to get the bat, you may as well spend them time to fix up the magnum air gun.

This is true - just sleep with Brick Road a lot.

How long did that take!?

A very long time. (I don't use an EB emulator.) I started it a few days late on the EBFGP. I just put down this game for a long time eventually, though. So maybe a few weeks or a month. Yeah, a long time.

And what's Paula's level right now for you. I've just started in Winters and I have — Ness: 37, Paula: 28, Jeff: 12.

I have no idea what Paula's level is. Ness is 45. Jeff got out of the section where that was available before 20, I think. I don't remember exactly. I remember having the Magnum Air Gun fixed long before getting out of there.

Anyway, some helpful hints. If you find an enemy who will run at you once you cross a certain vertical or horizontal line, walk in circles a bit without crossing that line until the Bubble Monkey stops. Cross that line with the right timing, and the Bubble Monkey will run up behind the pursuing enemy and get a green screen on it. Also, if a Spiteful Crow runs away from you, into a vertical wall, and you can stand below and above it on that wall, stand a bit below it and to the side, then with a quick turn, hit it above and to the side. If done right, you'll get a green screen.

I'm still levelling on the Cave Boys, and I haven't gotten to test the weapons with Paula and Ness, but hopefully, their Offense increases will be very helpful for Auto-winning against the enemies in Threed.
